Laser hair removal really does work. Its a proven effective technology that can save you time and money by permanently removing up to 95% of hair in a treated area. We’ve all heard of people say that it didn’t work for them or worse that they love the location they’ve been visiting for years! Neither of these are any good. The right medical grade technology and experienced technician can ensure your most effective procedure which means both seeing results and not having to endlessly perform treatments for years.

What are the benefits?

Unlike traditional methods (waxing, shaving, bleaching or using depilatory creams), Diolaze XL™ laser hair removal impacts the root of the problem, rather than offering a temporary solution. Traditional methods will require treatment forever, while Diolaze XL™ only requires a few sessions. Most patients immediately notice a significant reduction in hair growth and eventually smooth virtually hair-free skin.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

This procedure removes unwanted hair permanently by targeting and damaging the root of the hair. The laser itself is attracted to melanin (color) and uses light to heat the follicles. Assuming there is a good contrast between the skin and the hair, the laser damages the root and leaves behind a small stem.

During the next few weeks, it will seem like the hair is still growing when actually the skin is naturally pushing this stem up and out. In fact if you were to pull at these hairs with your fingers (not tweezers) they would simply slide out!

However only about a third of the hair on our bodies is at the right growth stage for laser hair removal. The remaining hair is either in the process of being shed or has been released from the follicle and the follicle is resting dormant before producing a new hair. Because of this natural hair growth cycle, effective laser hair removal requires regular treatments over the course of ten months to a year so that each follicle has the opportunity to be in the right growth stage for treatment.

Are All Lasers The Same?

Absolutely not! The two most important things to consider when selecting a laser hair removal provider is the training / ability of the technician and the laser that they are using. You will see a huge array of machines from medical grade diode lasers like our Diolaze XL™ to some very cheap older lasers to IPL lasers. Note that there is a major difference between diode and intense pulsed light (IPL) machines regardless of age. Should you come across some extremely cheap pricing then you’re most likely looking at an IPL.

Differences between Lasers and IPL

  1.  Lasers use high powered concentrated light at certain wavelengths to specific, small, focused areas of the skin which significantly reduces the risk of skin damage.
  2. IPL is not a laser at all in that it uses a broad spectrum of visible light wavelengths and can not be focused in a beam.
  3. IPL’s broad nature cause the light to be absorbed at different depths of your skin. This means less control in the application. In fact olive skin through darker shades (Fitzpatrick skin types III to VI) are advised to avoid IPL. These darker skin tones can suffer significant burns with IPL.
  4. High powered IPL machines are great for anti-ageing procedures like our Lumecca photo facials. They are not ideal for hair removal.
  5. True lasers can focus light deeper into the pores treating the follicle and preventing hair growth. This along with the Diolaze XL™’s cooling capabilities make for a comfortable and safe treatment that is extremely effective.

Skin Types for Laser Hair Removal

One of the most critical pieces of information for a technician when performing laser hair removal is your skin type. It will determine the how a client may respond to treatments and help determine the appropriate settings and treatment approach. Skin types are classified by a value on the Fitzpatrick Scale between 1 (I) and 6 (VI). When you book a laser hair appointment you will automatically receive a Skin Type Form via email. The questions here will help determine where on the scale (I – VI) your skin sits. The Fitzpatrick scale was developed as a way to estimate the response of different skin types to ultraviolet light. It is semi-subjective as it was developed by interviewing people and their past sun reactions. The scale goes from very fair (Skin Type I) to very dark (Skin Type VI) taking into account reaction to the sun, genetic disposition and tanning habits. At New Skin YYC we can treat all skin types due to the medical grade laser that we use and the advanced cooling technology that allows us to use powerful focused heat in an extremely comfortable, virtually painless procedure.

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

DioLaze Applicator

This is the most common question that we get! Obviously laser use significant heat and this is where picking the wrong technology will make a big difference. Our Diolaze XL™ laser is one of the most comfortable machines on the market. It uses 3 PC technology that provides pre-cooling, parallel cooling and post-cooling systems. The sapphire applicator tip is cooled all around and inside the delivery system. In addition the Diolaze XL™ has one of the biggest treatment surface areas on the market meaning treatments are quicker than ever.

Most people describe a slight tingling sensation while many do not feel anything at all. Clients almost always comment that they are surprised at how little they actually felt.

Treatment Preparation and Downtime

To prepare for laser hair removal make sure that you’ve showered and removed traces of oils, fragrances, creams, serums and lotion from the treatment area. You must shave the the areas within 24 hours before the treatment. This is critical as the laser attacks hair follicles and hair that remains above the surface of the skin may burn. Note that you should not wax, pluck or use any hair removal creams four weeks prior to your appointment as these remove the hair follicle from under the skin and this needs to be present for an effective treatment.

Making time for a laser hair removal session is easy as the DioLaze XL™ has no required downtime! So you can drop in for a treatment and head back to your regular day immediately. After the treatment the skin may be slightly red and have small, red bumps where contact with the follicles was made. This is totally normal and a sign your technician will look for to confirm a successful treatment. This should fade in the following couple of hours. Over the next 24 hours you should avoid hot tubs, saunas, hot showers or any significant sweat on the treated area.

Note that the treated hair below the surface will now be pushed out by your skin so it will look like your hair continues to grow! This should last 2 – 3 weeks until that hair has fallen out and results from the treatment become apparent.

Frequently Asked Questions

During laser treatment, a diode laser bream passes through the skin towards hair follicles. The penetrating energy then heats up the root of the hair, which in turn prevents future hair growth.

Diolaze XL™ has a built in skin cooling surface which is one of the largest for all hair removal devices. This makes treatment more comfortable than other devices, with most patients noting that DiolazeXL is virtually painless.

As with all laser hair removal methods, Diolaze XL™ requires a series of treatments. Laser hair removal works best when hair follicles are in their mature stage; however, at any given time your hair is in various stages of growth.

Hair is reduced with each treatment and results are observed after four to six sessions. The number of sessions will differ depending on your hair color, hair type, body area, and skin tone.

Diolaze XL™ can be safely used on most areas of the body that have unwanted hair. Most commonly treated areas include: bikini, legs, arms, chest, back, shoulders, stomach, neck, chin and sideburns.

Diolaze XL™ is one of the most advanced and effective laser hair removal systems in Calgary, making it ideal for clients of all skin types. As the laser focuses on hair pigmentation (like all lasers) those with very light blonde or white hair may not achieve desired results.
