What Is Acne?

Acne occurs when pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. This leads to inflammation and breakouts on the face, neck, chest, back, and shoulders. While acne is often associated with adolescence, many adults experience ongoing or hormonal acne well into adulthood.

Acne can vary in severity  from mild congestion to painful cystic breakouts  and may worsen without proper treatment.

Common Causes of Acne

Acne can develop due to one or a combination of the following factors:

  • Excess oil (sebum) production

  • Clogged pores and dead skin buildup

  • Acne-causing bacteria

  • Hormonal fluctuations

  • Genetics

  • Stress and lifestyle factors

  • Incorrect skincare products or over-exfoliation

Understanding the underlying cause is key to choosing the most effective treatment approach.

Hormonal acne is commonly seen in adults and is linked to hormonal fluctuations.

This is the mildest form of acne and occurs when pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells.
