What Is Cellulite?

Cellulite is the dimpled, uneven skin appearance caused by fibrous bands tethering the skin to underlying tissue while fat pushes through. It commonly affects the thighs, buttocks, and abdomen, and occurs in roughly 80–90% of women regardless of weight.

Common Causes of Cellulite

  • Fibrous septae pulling skin down while fat pushes up
  • Hormonal factors (estrogen reduces circulation and collagen)
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Loss of skin elasticity with age
  • Sedentary lifestyle and poor circulation
  • Diet high in salt, sugar, or refined carbs

Common Types of Cellulite

Grade 1 (Mild)

Visible only when skin is pinched; smooth at rest.

Grade 2 (Moderate)

Visible when standing but smooths when lying down.

Grade 3 (Severe)

Visible at rest with deep dimpling and “orange-peel” texture.

Adipose / Edematous / Fibrotic

Categorized by fat distribution, fluid retention, or hardened fibers.
