What Is Dark Spots & Hyperpigmentation?

Dark spots, also called hyperpigmentation, are flat areas of skin darker than the surrounding tone caused by excess melanin production. They include sun spots (solar lentigines), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) from acne, age spots, and freckles, and can appear on the face, hands, chest, and shoulders.

Common Causes of Dark Spots & Hyperpigmentation

  • Cumulative sun exposure (the leading cause)
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after acne or injury
  • Hormonal triggers (pregnancy, birth control)
  • Aging and skin cell turnover slowdown
  • Genetics and skin tone
  • Certain medications causing photosensitivity

Common Types of Dark Spots & Hyperpigmentation

Sun Spots / Solar Lentigines

Flat brown spots from cumulative UV damage, common on face, hands, and chest.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Dark marks left after acne, eczema, or skin trauma heals.

Age Spots
