What Is Rosacea & Facial Redness?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels (telangiectasia), flushing, and sometimes acne-like papules and pustules. It most commonly appears on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead, and tends to develop between ages 30 and 50 with a higher prevalence in fair-skinned women.

Common Causes of Rosacea & Facial Redness

  • Genetic predisposition and Northern European ancestry
  • Overactive blood vessels close to the skin surface
  • Demodex mites and the bacterium Bacillus oleronius
  • Triggers: sun exposure, heat, alcohol, spicy food, stress
  • Cathelicidin and KLK5 enzyme imbalance

Common Types of Rosacea & Facial Redness

Erythematotelangiectatic (ETR)

Persistent central facial redness with visible vessels and flushing.

Papulopustular

Redness with acne-like bumps and pustules, often mistaken for adult acne.

Phymatous

Thickened, bumpy skin texture, most often on the nose (rhinophyma).

Ocular Rosacea

Burning, irritated, watery eyes with eyelid inflammation.
