What Is Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks (striae) are narrow streaks or bands that form when skin stretches faster than collagen and elastin can keep up, tearing the dermis. They appear pink, red, or purple at first (striae rubrae) and fade to silver or white over time (striae albae).

Common Causes of Stretch Marks

  • Rapid growth during puberty
  • Pregnancy (especially abdomen, breasts, hips)
  • Significant weight gain or muscle gain
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Corticosteroid use (oral or topical)
  • Cushing’s syndrome and Marfan syndrome

Common Types of Stretch Marks

Striae Rubrae (Red/Purple)

New stretch marks, still vascular and easier to treat.

Striae Albae (White/Silver)

Mature, faded stretch marks with reduced pigment.

Striae Gravidarum

Pregnancy-related, often on abdomen and breasts.

Striae Atrophicans

Thin, depressed stretch marks from steroid use or Cushing’s.
