Microneedling Explained: Collagen Induction Therapy Benefits, Process & Results
A clinical guide to how percutaneous collagen induction rebuilds the dermis, fades acne scars, and refines skin texture, performed by licensed medical aestheticians at New Skin YYC.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive collagen induction therapy (CIT) that uses sterile micro-needles to create controlled micro-channels in the epidermis and upper dermis, triggering a wound-healing cascade that produces new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. The treatment refines skin texture, fades atrophic acne scars, softens fine lines, and improves the appearance of stretch marks and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Our professional microneedling treatment is performed by licensed medical aestheticians using a Health Canada-approved sterile cartridge device at adjustable depths between 0.25 mm and 2.5 mm.

How Microneedling Works: Collagen Induction Therapy
Microneedling is also called percutaneous collagen induction (PCI). A motorized pen-style device drives 9 to 36 sterile needles vertically into the stratum corneum and papillary dermis at speeds up to 8,000 rotations per minute. Each puncture forms a microscopic channel approximately 0.1 mm in diameter. The controlled micro-injury activates the three classic phases of dermal wound healing: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling.
During the proliferation phase, fibroblasts migrate to the wound site and synthesize Type I and Type III collagen. During remodeling, Type III collagen is gradually replaced by stronger Type I collagen over 60 to 90 days. The result is measurable dermal thickening and a smoother stratum corneum, documented in peer-reviewed studies published in the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery.
Clinical Benefits of Microneedling
Acne Scar Reduction
A 31% reduction in atrophic acne scar depth after two sessions, with progressive improvement through six sessions.
Fine Lines & Wrinkles
Increased Type I collagen density softens periorbital, perioral, and forehead lines.
Stretch Marks
Effective on both red striae rubrae and white striae albae on the abdomen, thighs, and breasts.
Hyperpigmentation
Disperses melanin deposits without delivering heat to the basal layer, lowering PIH risk.
Topical Absorption
Micro-channels increase transdermal absorption of serums up to 80x for 30 minutes post-treatment.
Pore Refinement
Strengthens follicular walls, visibly reducing the appearance of enlarged pores.
The Microneedling Procedure at New Skin YYC
A microneedling appointment at our clinic lasts 60 to 75 minutes. The clinical protocol follows six steps.
- Consultation and Fitzpatrick skin typing. A medical aesthetician assesses skin type I to VI, identifies active acne, rosacea flares, or keloid history, and confirms candidacy.
- Cleansing. The treatment area is double-cleansed with a low-pH cleanser to remove sebum and surface bacteria.
- Topical anesthesia. A compounded lidocaine 23% / tetracaine 7% cream is applied for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Needling pass. Depth is adjusted by zone: 0.5 mm on the forehead and eye area, 1.0 to 1.5 mm on the cheeks, and up to 2.0 mm on acne-scarred regions.
- Serum infusion. A sterile hyaluronic acid or peptide serum is pressed into the open micro-channels.
- Post-treatment occlusion. Mineral SPF 50 and a calming barrier cream are applied.
Microneedling vs. Morpheus8 vs. HydraFacial
Traditional microneedling delivers mechanical micro-injury only. Morpheus8 RF microneedling combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to remodel subdermal adipose tissue, making it the stronger option for jawline laxity and deeper wrinkles. The HydraFacial hydradermabrasion treatment is a non-invasive option that exfoliates and infuses serums without creating wounds. For early collagen support and acne scar revision in clients under 40, classic microneedling is typically the most cost-effective entry point.

Downtime and Aftercare Protocol
Erythema resembling a moderate sunburn lasts 24 to 48 hours. Pinpoint bleeding during treatment resolves within minutes. Mild flaking can appear on days 3 to 5. Follow these aftercare rules for 72 hours:
- Avoid retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C.
- Cleanse with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free gentle cleanser.
- Apply mineral zinc oxide SPF 30+ every two hours when outdoors.
- Skip the gym, sauna, hot yoga, and chlorinated pools.
- Sleep on a fresh pillowcase to limit bacterial exposure.
Who Is a Candidate for Microneedling
Microneedling is appropriate for Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI because it generates no chromophore-targeted heat. It is contraindicated for clients with active cystic acne, herpes simplex outbreaks, keloid scarring history, active eczema or psoriasis in the treatment zone, current isotretinoin (Accutane) use within the past six months, or pregnancy.
How Many Sessions, Frequency, and Cost
A standard collagen-building course is three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, matching the dermal remodeling cycle. Acne scar revision typically requires six sessions. Maintenance sessions every three to four months sustain results. Single-session pricing for our face microneedling treatment starts at $340. Series packages and our Beauty Bank membership program reduce the per-session cost. Add-ons such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy or LED red-light therapy can be combined in one appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does microneedling hurt?
With topical anesthesia, most clients rate discomfort 2 to 3 out of 10. The sensation is described as vibrating sandpaper.
Can microneedling be combined with PRP?
Yes. PRP growth factor therapy uses serum spun from the client’s own blood and applied during the micro-channels phase, accelerating collagen synthesis.
When will I see results?
An immediate glow appears within 48 hours. Structural collagen results become visible at the 4-week mark and continue to improve through 90 days.
Is microneedling safe for dark skin?
Yes. Microneedling delivers no thermal energy, so the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is significantly lower than ablative laser resurfacing for Fitzpatrick IV-VI skin.
Can I do microneedling at home?
Home derma-rollers reach a maximum depth of 0.25 mm, below the threshold required for collagen induction. They also carry a higher infection risk due to non-sterile reuse.
